The ALCOLOCK Advantage

A DUI is a serious offense, and the legal system can be challenging to navigate. If you’ve been convicted of a DUI and told that you have to install an Ignition Interlock Device (IID), you likely feel confused and even a bit scared. The process can be daunting, but ALCOLOCK has years of experience in the IID installation field, and we’ll help walk you through the entire process.

What is An Ignition Interlock Program?

If you’ve received a DUI/DWI conviction you’ll likely be required to enter an Ignition Interlock Program. This program requires you to install an IID in your car, which is a breathalyzer that hooks up to your ignition. In order to operate your vehicle, you’ll have to take and pass a breathalyzer test. You’ll also have to test with the device at various points throughout your drive.

In most situations, IID installation is necessary in order to restore your driving privileges. If you drive more than one vehicle, you’ll have to install an Ignition Interlock Device in each vehicle you drive regularly.

There are a few main goals of the Ignition Interlock Program:

  • Allow drivers to use their vehicles instead of taking the vehicle away entirely.
  • Help drivers prove accountability and make positive steps towards a better future.
  • Monitor those convicted of a DUI/DWI to help ensure public safety.
  • Monitor those convicted of a DUI/DWI to help ensure their own safety.
  • Give those convicted of a DUI/DWI independence while still maintaining accountability.

Once you enter the IID program you’ll need to have your device properly installed. It’s important that you visit a registered IID installation company who is experienced and understands the process. After the IID installation is complete, you’ll be required to check in regularly with your service provider throughout the duration of your enrollment in the Ignition Interlock Program.

The installation process, order of steps, and required duration of your enrollment in the IID program all vary from state to state.

How Does an Ignition Interlock Device Work?

An IID device is placed inside your vehicle and is attached to the ignition. In order for your car to start you’ll have to breathe into the IID and pass the breathalyzer test. You’ll likely have to repeat the test while driving, as well. When you breathe into the device, your breath passes through a sensor that specifically detects alcohol. It then calculates your BrAC level. It you pass, you can start the car.
