Ignition Interlock Installation | Pennsylvania

      What is Ignition Interlock Installation?

Ignition interlock installation is what you have to go through when you’ve been ordered to install an IID. It’s a device that’s installed in your vehicle to prevent you from drinking and driving. The ignition interlock connects to the engine and controls the power and control circuits. In order to enable these circuits and thus be able to turn on and drive your car you have to pass a breathalyzer test. If your Breath Alcohol Content, or BrAC, is within a preset limit the car will start. If the device detects an amount over that limit, the ignition will remain locked and the failed test will be recorded in compliance with legal requirements. You will have to install an ignition interlock device on every car you plan to drive during your time in the ignition interlock program.

Pennsylvania Laws Regarding Ignition Interlock Installation

In Pennsylvania, ignition interlock installation is mandated via a court order. Even after your first DUI conviction you’ll have to serve a license suspension period of a year. However, during that time you may be able to apply for an Occupational Limited License or OLL. To obtain an OLL, you’ll have to pay a $50 fee, provide proof of insurance, complete the DL-15 form, and, in most cases, agree to have an ignition interlock installed in your vehicle for the duration of your suspension. Depending on how many prior convictions you’ve had and your BAC at the time of arrest, you may also have to pay fines of up to $10,000, serve jail time up to five years, and provide proof of having attended and completed a state-approved alcohol treatment program. Consult your attorney to find out the specifics of your case and what you’re required to do.
